Kaikoura police are urging people to drive responsibly and wear seatbelts as the number of infringement tickets handed out in the last week soared.

Complaints from drivers about other drivers had also increased, with Kaikoura police responding to two or three complaints each day in the Kaikoura area alone.

Sergeant Barry Hansen of Kaikoura police said many drivers, mostly tourists, had been failing to keep left on State Highway 1 both north and south of Kaikoura.

On the weekend a lot of tickets were given to local people not wearing seatbelts, Mr Hansen said.

He also warned drivers to heed stop signs, after police noticed drivers going straight through the signs at the intersection into the West End

"Already there have been some infringement notices given there and there will be more," Mr Hansen said.

"If people don't stop there will be a serious accident there soon."
