The team at Encounter Kaikoura are celebrating after being named as one of the world's top 10 heart-pounding experiences.

The dusky dolphin swimming tours have been named on the top 10 list compiled by the Lonely Planet and feature in their 1000 Ultimate Experiences book.

The tour is up there with Pamplona's bull-running, a motorcycle taxi ride in Thailand and shooting to the edge of space in a MiG-29 fighter jet.

Encounter Kaikoura owner Dennis Buurman said the company was thrilled and obviously delighted that it had been included in the list, which was not only a good sign for them but good for the town in general.

"This accolade, along with the other recent achievements by Kaikoura tourism operators, reinforces the fact that Kaikoura is recognised as a world class destination," Mr Buurman said.

Encounter Kaikoura had received a lot of leverage from the placing, which made front page of the Tourism New Zealand website, and their twitter page had "gone mad", said spokesperson Jo Thompson.
