Kaikoura's Maori MP, Rahui Katene, has called on freedom campers to show respect following the news that campers are regularly seen at Nga Niho Pa on Scarborough St.

The MP for Te Tai Tonga said freedom campers to the town needed to take more care when deciding where to and where not to dispose of their waste.

"It is simple really – only toilet where there are toilets, or, if you have to go somewhere else, then make sure to take your waste with you when you leave," she said.

"The people of Kaikoura respect their visitors so it is more than reasonable for them to expect the same in return."

Ms Katene said she encouraged all businesses which dealt with freedom campers to inform them of the need to be mindful of where they do their business when they are in the Kaikoura region.
