Kaikoura police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after two separate assaults at the weekend.

The first occurred about 11pm on Saturday on Davidson Tce. A male victim was punched to the ground and then kicked, suffering substantial injuries.

Sergeant Barry Hansen said police were investigating the incident to which he believed there were a number of witnesses. He urged people to come forward if they had any information.

The second attack happened about midnight on Saturday, on the peninsula near Cromer and Ward Sts.

The victim, who was punched in the head, required medical treatment.

Mr Hansen said an arrest was likely and he was again looking for witnesses to come forward and assist police with their inquiries.
