Travellers doing their bit

Kaikoura
Ten volunteers from Canada and the United States have really dug in during a two week visit to Kaikoura to make a positive contribution to the environment.
They are part of international student volunteers (ISV) which runs responsible tourism programmes in eight countries such as Costa Rica, Australia and South Africa for American and Canadian students.
During their stay the students have been busy working on the Trees For Travellers programme, planting trees on the peninsula, digging weeds and mulching native trees.
They have also been working with Environment Canterbury to control weeds and maintain reserves, among other projects.
Project leader Sirri Smith said it was a holistic way of travelling.
"The students can give something back to the communities and environments they are visiting."
Ms Smith said the organisation had a strong element of education and the students had learned about hutton's shearwaters and discussed environmental issues.
The students are off to explore the rest of New Zealand for two weeks before going home.
It was the second ISV group which had visited Kaikoura this year.
