It's Christmas box time again.

Operation Christmas Child is a scheme where a shoe box is filled with children's gifts, and this year Kaikoura has a new organiser.

Denice Devine is organising the boxes, replacing Lisa Bond who has stepped down due to other commitments.

Mrs Devine said she hoped to gain as many boxes as last year.

"We collected more than 300 boxes last year and this year we hope to hit the same number again."

The shoe boxes, which can be filled with items such as toys, school stationery, games, something special and clothes, can be collected and dropped off at the Bank of New Zealand and Heartland services.

Boxes contain information with ideas about what to include in the box.

Mrs Devine said that two years ago a team from New Life church went to Fiji on a mission trip and saw a child with a gift shoe box.

It was treasured by the little girl and still contained all the gifts, which were neatly packed away after being played with.

"It shows how much of a difference we can make to a child," Mrs Devine said.

The cut-off date for the appeal has been set for October 13 in order to get the gifts to the children in time for Christmas.

Each box needs to be specifically made with a child in mind and needs to be dropped off along with an $8 donation to cover shipping costs.

No box need have contents worth more than $20.
