Just five stout souls braved Kaikoura's chilly surf and snow event on Saturday – but the hardy few were well recompensed.

The annual R'n'R surf and snowboarding competition on Saturday rewarded the small but dedicated group with a viewing of a whale as the surf competition started.

Five keen surfers braved the 8-degree water to compete in challenging waves at Meatworks.

Local surfer Sam Dunfoy showed his style and won the surfing challenge.

"It's a great comp, you get worn out from the surfing and then have to go snowboarding," he said.

"It's pretty amazing – there's not many places where you can surf and snowboard in the same day."

Veteran of the event Jonni Chambers was a judge this year.

He said the hardest thing about the competition is getting the motivation to get into the cold water.

Organiser and competitor Brent Proctor said it was an awesome day, with fast conditions at Mt Lyford for the boarder cross.

Mike Willman from Christchurch took out the boarder cross event, which made him the overall winner when combined with the surfing event earlier in the day.

Results: Mike Willman, 1, Brent Proctor, 2, Felix Vavasour, 3.
