A University of Canterbury teaching laboratory and accommodation centre in Kaikoura has been closed because of safety fears.

The closure of the Kaikoura Field Station building last week followed a structural assessment that indicated it fell short of meeting the code for compliance.

Bookings for visiting school parties have been cancelled.

The university said a report on the structural assessment of the teaching laboratory and accommodation building was not yet complete, but the safety of staff, students and visitors was paramount.

The university was now awaiting the formal report and details of possible remedial work to make the building safe.

The research laboratory remains open.

Field station manager Jack van Berkel said he hoped the report would suggest steps for remedial action.
