Kaikoura racehorse owner Murray Boyd is jumping for joy after Donegal Delight raced to victory at the Rangiora Winter Cup on Sunday.
Donegal Delight made light of a 30 metre handicap, proving too strong for Magical Mel and front-running Piper Heidsieck, in the Pineacres Restaurant & Bar Rangiora Winter Cup.
The win came much to the delight of owner Murray Boyd, pictured being heckled by associates from the stand during the race presentation.
Donegal Delight was unfortunate to be born in the same year as top aged group mares Carabella and Bettor Cover Lover.
While she has been in the shadow of those mares in the age group features, she has shown her worth, winning 14 of 43 starts for $183,170 in stakes.
The Bettor's Delight mare improved three wide with cover behind Scarrymcleary during the final 1300m on Sunday and was too good when angled wide in the run home.
She paced the 2600m (stand) in 3:17.9 – a 2:02.4 mile rate in the cool conditions – with the leaders running their last 800m in 57.1s and the final 400m in 27.8s.
