Emergency services were called to the scene of an accident up the Puhi Puhi Valley on Friday morning when a car ended up on its roof.

The alarm was raised at 10.30am, however, Kaikoura Volunteer Fire Brigade chief Ian Walker said by the time help arrived the two occupants had managed to free themselves from the car.

Mr Walker said the vehicle was leaking fuel so the fire brigade contained the spill and hosed down the road.

The driver and passenger, a man and woman in their early 20s from Britain, escaped with minor injuries, he said.
