Some golfers wait their whole life to feel the thrill of getting a hole in one, but Kaikoura golfer Aaron Reid has managed to score two already, and that's just this year.
"I got the first one on the fourth during interclub, then the other day I got one on the 13th. I didn't know it had gone in at first, I thought it could've gone over the back. Terry Fell took a drive up there to have a look."
Terry is Aaron's lucky charm - he was with Aaron on both occasions so he may be wise to keep him close at hand for the rest of the year just in case a hat-trick is looming.
Last weekend while Aaron was notching up his second hole in one he also managed to equal the best amateur score for the course with a 66 gross, which he shares with the club's other young impressive talent, Aaron Pablecheque.
Aaron plays off a scratch handicap, and has been playing some outstanding golf this year. At the annual Kaikoura Pro-Am tournament in October, he recorded the best score of all the golfers including the professionals over the weekend, with a 68 on Saturday and 67 on Sunday for a total of 135.
"That was the best I've played consecutively in a long time," he says. "I would have thought [the professionals] would have played better but they had trouble putting."
But although Aaron is impressing at the local club, the 31-year-old remains modest about his golfing future.
"It's too late for me to become pro and you can't really live off it in New Zealand. And anyway there are a lot of people in New Zealand who are much better."
He took up the sport as a teenager with his parents when they lived in Palmerston North, and continued once they moved to Kaikoura. He readily admits he does not put a great deal of time into practice.
But he will still be the one to beat this weekend at the men's open. Aaron won last year so will be defending his title, but is reluctant to show too much confidence.
"We'll see. It just depends what happens on the day."
