One town's loss is another town's gain, and in this case Kaikoura looks set to win three weeks of carnival fun, thanks to a hiccup with JBC Shows' original plans to go to Nelson.

The travelling carnival, complete with a new ghoulish ghost train, has set up at the Kaikoura Rugby Club, Takahanga Domain.

Along with the Halloween Hotel there will be plenty to feast your eyes on, including an inflatable Alcatraz, laughing clowns and an American SideWinder.

Organiser John Couling said getting the go-ahead at the last minute from the Kaikoura District Council and Rugby Club had been a great help. With enough support in Kaikoura this summer, there is potential for the event to become a regular feature for the town, adding another attraction for locals and visitors.

Because of logistical and time constraints this year the event will be scaled down in Kaikoura, but the family-run fairground has plenty more rides so if the demand is there, the show could get bigger next year.

The carnival will run until January 13.
