Kaikoura Seafest has been selected as a top 10 semi-finalist in the Mitre 10 community of the year category of the New Zealander of the Year Awards.

With more than 100 nominations received in this category and after a rigorous judging process throughout November, this is considered a significant achievement that recognises the contribution the event makes to the local community.

The winner will be revealed on February 28 at the Gala Awards Dinner at the Langham Hotel, Auckland. More than 500 guests are expected to attend.

Seafest is one of 58 semifinalists announced for this year's awards, and co-conveners John Macphail and Janice Dreaver said on behalf of the Seafest committee last week they were thrilled with the recognition.

The nomination reinforced the committee's role in marketing Kaikoura to the national audience, they said.

A representative will be attending the awards dinner in Auckland, in case they are successful in winning the category.
