Speed is likely to have been a factor in a truck crash south of kaikoura on Friday afternoon, police say.

Emergency services were called to the accident just after 4pm at the start of the hundalees.

The freightlines truck, carrying bales of hay, was travelling north towards Kaikoura and failed to negotiate a right hand bend at the bottom of a hill. The site is the same as the scene of a stock truck crash which made headlines In December 2011.

Constable Andy grant of Kaikoura police said speed was likely to have been a factor although police enquiries were continuing at this stage.

The driver was taken by ambulance to the Kaikoura medical centre with minor injuries.

Kaikoura St John team manager Don Wright said the 25-year-old driver suffered a cut to his right elbow and a moderate injury to his right knee
