Levi O'Connor says he was stoked to catch this fine specimen off the beach in South Bay on Sunday evening with a surfcaster while he was trying to catch rig.
The snapper was 55cm long and tipped the scales at 1.8kg. Anton Evans from Hunting and Fishing Kaikoura said the catch was a pretty rare feat nowadays in Kaikoura.
While it used to be more common many years ago, only one or two of the fish were now caught off the local coast each year, as stocks have been depleted by commercial fishing boats.
