The behaviour of competitors at the Kaikoura High School swimming sports day two weeks ago was a good reminder of the school's core principles, including awhi, which was shown in all events and on the sidelines too, with plenty of support for all the swimmers, regardless of age or house.

School principal Werner van Aswegen said the day had been the best swimming sports event ever, with the weather turning on its charm as well as the students.

There were very high levels of participation this year, he said, as well as a huge support from parents.

"What was most rewarding was the levels of awhi shown by the senior students towards the juniors," he said.

The house competition ended up being won by Cooke house, followed by Flower, Braddock and Monk.
