A camping spot north of Kaikoura highly recommended by tourist guidebook Lonely Planet is getting an upgrade.

A $20,000 surplus from the road sealing budget will be used to seal an area of road outside the Department of Conservation campground on the Puhi Puhi Valley Rd.

The council agreed to the move at its meeting last week after recognising the increase of campers vehicles on the road. The increase has been put down to its mention in the Lonely Planet guide. The extra traffic causes a significant dust problem.

Councillor Tony Blunt said the area was "absolutely chocka" in the evenings and early morning.

Council moved the recommendation made by its engineer that the unexpended funds in the seal extension budget be allocated to the work.
