A woman in her 60s has suffered a leg injury while walking a cliff track around the Kaikoura Peninsula.

Sergeant Julian Lewis, of Kaikoura, said the woman was on a ledge about 15 metres above the beach when the accident happened.

It was not yet known how she was injured but it is believed her artificial knee gave way.

The woman could not be reached by volunteer firefighters or coastguard and had to be rescued by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter from Christchurch.

The helicopter landed just after 1pm.

The woman was in a state of shock, Mr Lewis said.
