A campervan driver remains in a critical condition following a head-on collision near Kaikoura yesterday.

The crash between a four-wheel-drive and a campervan happened at Mangamaunu, on State Highway 1, about 4.15pm yesterday.

Firefighters had to cut two people from the vehicles, including the male driver of the campervan who was then flown to Wellington Hospital.

A hospital spokesman said the man was in a critical condition in the intensive care unit today.

His female passenger was in the hospital's short-stay unit for observation, the spokesman said.

The male driver of the four-wheel-drive was flown to Christchurch Hospital in a serious condition yesterday.

State Highway 1 was closed until about 8pm yesterday.

A serious crash investigation was underway.
