Four divers have been rescued near Kapiti Island, north of Wellington, after their boat was washed away.

Police Inspector Paul Jermy said the divers swam to tiny Brown's Island after they lost their boat in choppy seas.

They have now been picked up by Kapiti Coastguard.

They had wetsuits and lifejackets on and were not injured, Mr Jermy said.

Police believed all four divers were adults.

Two men, Jack Webber, 49, and Hamish Kronfeld, 35, drowned trying to swim to shore when their boat sank near the island in 1999.
