Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Kirby said an elderly man's body was found at a Campbell St property around 8.30am.

Police have cordoned off half of the street while a scene examination was completed.

"We are in the very early stages of our inquiry and are gathering information at the moment, including formally identifying the victim.

"I would like to hear from anyone with information about suspicious behaviour or movements around Campbell St over the last 24 hours," Kirby said.

Police were still at the scene and were interviewing neighbours about the death.

Many people living on Campbell St said they didn't know the elderly man as most people in the area kept to themselves.

Neighbour Marie McDonald said she met the man once and he was a "lovely guy''.

"He's only been in the area for a very short time, from what I gather.''

She said she was "shocked'' someone may have been killed on her street.

"It's sad because he was a lovely gentleman.''

An ambulance spokesman said they were also called to the scene but could provide no further information.
