OPINION: Another weekend, another big event. It's that time of year again in Marlborough when there seems to be something happening every weekend.

Following on from last weekend's Marlborough Anniversary celebrations, tomorrow sees the start of the Marlborough A and P Show. This event is not just for those with a penchant for things rural. It is a family event with plenty to see and do for people of all ages.

Also on this weekend is Hunter's Garden Marlborough. This is one of Marlborough's iconic events that bring many people and lots of money to the region. The garden workshops are extremely popular and the garden fete on Sunday wraps up the event in style.

There have been concerns in the past that these two events are always held on the same weekend and that some who were keen to participate in both events were unable to do so.

These two events are complementary, creating a showcase of all that Marlborough has to offer.

Next weekend brings the annual Marlborough Express Boat and Recreation Show. This event, which enjoys excellent support from local businesses (and some from further afield), will provide another opportunity for Marlborough families to enjoy a day out in the sun.

All these events significantly boost Marlborough. Locals cannot complain there is nothing to do in this region when these events have so much to offer. Anniversary weekend events were helped with good weather and hopefully the sun will continue to shine in the coming weeks.

Behind each of these event is a lot of hard work in organisation, and much needed support through sponsorship.

The rewards are in the spinoffs, by increasing Marlborough's profile, and by providing a boost to many businesses from the accommodation to retail sectors.

Without these events it would be a rather flat time of year. Instead it is one of the best, so let's make the most of it.

The public sale of fireworks has been restricted in recent years and this has seen a marked decrease in the number of fire work-related accidents.

Sales have been down this year but there will still be plenty of people making things go bang and boom while making pretty sparks.

If you are planning on celebrating Guy Fawkes tonight please use common sense.

Fireworks users should keep them away from buildings, keep the fireworks contained and keep pets safe. Following these simple rules will ensure that we should be able to celebrate Guy Fawkes safely.
