Well done, Marlborough
Congratulations to the teams behind yet another successful year of the Hunter's Garden Marlborough and the A&P Show over the weekend.
Putting on an event is a massive undertaking by a dedicated and primarily volunteer-based committee. They have to plan for every eventuality. Thank goodness the one thing they can't plan for, the weather, played its part.
The gardeners of Garden Marlborough also deserve recognition. No doubt there were many hours of hard work to ensure their gardens were, well, blooming. There must be immense satisfaction for the gardeners and organising committee in seeing people boarding coaches heading out into the region. I hope that as they are relaxing this week they are feeling proud. Proud also for what they have achieved for their community, as the real beneficiaries of any event held in the region are the businesses and people who receive the financial and social rewards of their effort. Whether you are a business owner or employee you can't help but recognise that having more people out and about over an event weekend is all good.
Even if you weren't impacted from a business perspective, as a Marlburian you would have had the opportunity to enjoy a nationally significant event without having to leave home.
It was great to see some retailers embracing the spirit of Garden Marlborough. That spirit is what builds the reputation of our region as a welcoming and event-friendly destination.
It is a real team effort to organise an event, and an even bigger team is required to make the most of the opportunity. This week, Marlborough District Council is advertising the new regional event strategy co-ordinator role. This was established after Destination Marlborough's industry advisory group, Grow Marlborough, pitched the concept to the council through the annual plan process earlier this year. The great thing about this new role is that it will ease information sharing, fostering ideas and action plans to ensure everyone can plan to make the most of events hosted in the region. Central to this is to review the event calendar to ensure the region has the right mix of events during the year, builds the strength of existing events and identifies any gaps or adjustments that could be made to ensure maximum benefit to the region.
As the regional marketing organisation, we are looking forward to being part of that team. Our role is to send the message out to attract visitors to Marlborough with the confidence that when they get here, they will have a great time. There is a stellar lineup of events coming over summer, so take full advantage of them, whether you are in business or just a proud Marlburian. Better yet, encourage friends and family to come and enjoy them with you.
