Juniors finish third in teams challenge

Eight of Nelson's best tennis juniors teamed up with Marlborough to take part in the ASB South Island Queen's Birthday 10s and 12s teams event in Timaru.

Teams consisted of four girls and four boys in the 10-year-old and 12-year-old age groups, involving eight players each from Nelson and Blenheim, who competed against teams from five other South Island regions. Both teams finished third.

Five rounds saw the 10s team take on South Canterbury in the first round, beating them 9-3, showing strength in both the singles and doubles combinations. This theme continued in the second round against Otago, winning 9-3.

Round three was dominated by Canterbury City, who won 11-1, with Canterbury Country also too strong in round four, beating Tasman 10-2. However, the 10s finished on a triumphant note, beating Southland 11-1.

The first round of the 12s saw an even battle against South Canterbury, Tasman securing the win at 8-4. The next round was a 12-0 clean sweep against Otago with convincing wins by all Tasman players.

The fight was on in the third round with Tasman losing 9-3 to Canterbury City before a similarly hard-fought battle took place against Canterbury Country with Tasman winning 8-4. The final round ended on a high for the 12s who romped to a substantial 12-0 win against Southland.
