Sharp efforts from Marlborough trio

Three Marlborough athletes picked up podium placings when the Christchurch Airport Marathon, half marathon, 10km run and 10km walk, were contested in bitterly cold conditions on Sunday.

In the full marathon Picton's Margaret Hazelwood delivered another standout performance to finish first in the W60-69 age group; youngster Stella Blake was second in the half marathon W12-19 grade and Yvonne Watson finished seventh overall in the 10km walk and runner-up in her section.

It was an outstanding effort from Blake, 14, a year 10 student at Marlborough Girls' College, who finished second in last week's Tasman schools cross-country champs. This was Blake's first half marathon and she completed the 21km distance in 1:40.49, running alongside her mother, Rachel Quigley, who recorded the same time, good enough for eighth place in the W40-49 section.

Ray Boardman was the quickest Marlburian in the full marathon while Emily Stenhouse, who recorded 1:36:40, was the fastest Marlborough finisher in the half. Stenhouse finished 235th overall and 23rd in the W20-39 group.

At the front of the field, Timaru's Sam Wreford took seven seconds off his previous career best time to win the 42.2km event in 2:16:28.

Ice on the road cost him the chance of breaking the race record set by Tom Birnie back in 1985.

Texas-based Aucklander Liza Hunter-Galvan won the women's event for the fifth time clocking 2:43:40. Callan Moody of Canterbury and Gabrielle O'Rourke of Wellington took the half marathon titles. Their times were 1:06:06 sec and 1:17:07 respectively.
