The Marlborough Harness Racing Club's annual two-day winter meeting will be held at Blenheim's Waterlea Racecourse tomorrow and Sunday.
The main race tomorrow will be the Peter Yealands Winter Cup Prelude for class 3 and faster pacers, set to go at 3.10pm. On Sunday the Winter Cup will be contested.
MHRC secretary Barry Forbes said he was happy with the fields, expected to be fitted into 11 races on both days. "This meeting is a bit more low-key than the summer festivals, but the fields are even and most of the prominent Canterbury trainers will be here with good teams," Forbes said.
Included among them will be Terry Chmeil, Cran Dalgety, Robert Dunn, Robbie Holmes, Mark Jones and Greg Hope.
Also expected on Sunday is top trainer Mark Purdon, with two horses.
Many Marlborough trainers will also be well represented, including Kaikoura's Grant Anderson with four starters, Graham Neill, also with four, Mark Gill (3), Mark Heaton (1), Alan Shutkowski (1), Tubby Smith (2) and Brent Weaver, who will harness up seven charges.
Admission is free, with the first race tomorrow at 10.50am and the opening event on Sunday at 11am.
