Dovey tops stableford

Marlborough's Jenny Dovey made a winning start to the Allan Scott Wines women's golf tournament, posting the best overall stableford score at the Fairhall Golf Course yesterday.

Playing on her home course, Dovey accumulated 44 points over the 18-hole stableford to finish one point clear of runner-up Nan Bisley from Motueka.

Bisley's total saw her win the intermediate title by one point. Hutt Valley's Moira Gough placed second, heading off Kaikoura's Valerie Graham and Miramar's Colleen Spencer on countback. They were followed by Marlborough Golf Club members Noreen Ashwell, Jackie McGarry, Ros Hobbs, Jenny Saville and Lorraine Walton.

Fellow Marlborough member Ako Meadows claimed the junior title with 42 stableford points. Anne Meacham from the Hutt Valley placed second ahead of Marlborough's Vivienne Bond in third on countback from Clearwater's Christine Plimmer.

Clearwater's Joy Smith, also with 42 points, took the senior honours from Hutt Valley's Janet Hunter and Royal Wellington's Pam Spry. Marlborough's Kerrin Black and Shirley Startup placed fourth and fifth respectively with 39 points each.

Play continues today with fourball nett where golfers will be lining up the number five hole. A Mini Cooper convertible is on offer for anybody able to score an ace on the par three.
