Speedsters sprint for fastest time

Slow-moving Sunday drivers would be well advised to stay clear of the Riverlands Industrial Estate when the Marlborough Car Club host their annual Tyreland Blenheim Street Sprint this weekend.
Entries are again healthy, with 34 competitors signed up with local and visiting drivers again speeding their way towards fastest-time honours on the quarter mile stretch of road.
Racing starts at 9am on Sunday with each driver clocking three timed runs.
The top 16 shootout for the top eight, top four and finally the two remaining speedsters will push the limits in a winner-takes-all final shootout.
Last year Neville Stowell from Timaru stole the fastest time in his 650hp Nissan Skyline Godzilla, setting a new record in the process.
Leading the local charge was Neil Webb, placing second in his Mirage, while Christchurch driver Peter Marshall piloted his Subaru WRX to third.
Times are always close with spectators treated to an action-packed day.
Local drivers to watch for include Matt Ryan, Kerry Hammond, Daniel Flood, Rob Uddstrom, Matt Sutherland and Ryan McNabb.
There will be a one-minute silence held before racing starts for Matt Heagney, a previous winner of the event in 2006 who tragically died recently.
Those who knew Heagney through the racing and wider community will have the young motorsport enthusiast in their thoughts on Sunday.
