A final-play touchdown from Ben Stark saw Biddy Kate's Greats slip away from Landsdowne Park on Thursday with a 3-3 draw with Waikawa Bay Maori in an enterprising men's grade-one touch encounter.
Waikawa looked to have the match won. With the scores locked 2-2 just minutes earlier, Greats were hard on attack when Waikawa's Vernon Fredricks intercepted a pass and headed up field. While Fredricks was run down 20 metres short of the line, Greats' defence couldn't recover and Hayden Gaudin went over following a quick roll ball.
However, Greats still had time, with Stark slipping across the Waikawa line on their final attacking movement.
Earlier, Greats made an enterprising start with Blaze Robb over in the first minute.
From the tap off Waikawa quickly turned over possession and Greats crossed the line again through Adam Goldsworthy.
Five minutes in, Waikawa scored their first try through Gaudin. Just before halftime, swift passing out wide put Jesse MacDonald over to level the scores.
Both teams had their chances to score in the second half, with only the last pass letting them down.
In the night's other grade-one game, Marlborough Boys' College Seniors sounded a warning to the grade's other teams with a slick 5-0 win over Base Woodbourne.
Wednesday night's mixed touch was called off due to wet weather.
After three rounds, Young Money is setting the grade-one pace as the only unbeaten team. However, they will face their stiffest test tomorrow when they play Base Woodbourne.
Defending champs Devine and Mike McConnell Motors also look to be serious title challengers.
