There was nothing shady about Kim Swan's victory in the open class of Marlborough's competitive trail ride on Sunday.

Riding the Tinline (Maungatapu) track in still, clear conditions, Swan guided Roselea Shady over the 35- kilometre course to come home closest to the ideal time and with low heart rates. Her total score of 118 was comfortably first.

Oliver Radford and Temptations Future (131) came second, with Missy Green riding Xavier Cheerokee third. The points differential was similar in the 25km intermediate class, with Fiona Radford scoring 119 on The Duke of Marlborough from Jenny May and Puketoi Aliyah, 133, then Sophie Harris and Dorian Ya Ha Bebe.

Youth was taken out by Tessa Wells and Masada Park Maestro, scoring 136. Cameron Hunt was the sole competitor in the training 25km class, but he was still delighted to win on Chat by Chance, with 132 faults and low time penalties.

Training 18km proved the day's closest class, with eventual winner Lisa Milner and Africa finishing strongly on 144 and Caroline Abbott just two points back on Naibara Africa.

In the biggest class of the day, the novice 18km, first-time CTR rider and new club member Jake Telfar, riding Star, tied for first with club regular Vivien Wadsworth on Leroy Brown. Both had only 101 faults. Alison Moores and Solo came second.

The four-kilometre lead rein featured Rai Valley sisters Jordan and Leah Wearing on their ponies Penny and Spirit. Each completed their ride in 51 minutes, Jordan coming out on top with 72 faults to Leah's 89.
