The Marlborough Boys' College volleyball team continued their steady improvement, placing second at the Tasman Secondary Schools' Junior Volleyball Championships at Nelson's Trafalgar Centre last weekend.

MBC dropped just one match in six round-robin games to finish runners-up to Waimea College Year 10 in the boys' division one competition at the two-day tournament.

Coach Alana Cairns said the team performed "amazingly well" and had come a long way since claiming the division two title at the Tasman Junior Invitation Tournament at Marlborough Lines Stadium earlier this month.

Cairns said the most pleasing efforts came in wins over Nelson College and Nayland College.

Against Nelson, MBC trailed 3-14 in the first set but rallied to win 28-26, then in the second dug out of a 4-17 hole to win 25-23.

Throughout the tournament Tristan Hegglun and Ollie Baker were outstanding in both the front and backcourt while Andrew Jeffries sacrificed plenty of skin, diving for balls.

Setters Alex Dean and Fabio Raimundo provided accurate service while Junior Afatia-Sile, Sam Marshall, Bryce Foster and Brayden Leslie all made an impact off the bench.

MBC's effort qualified them for a spot in division one at the South Island Junior Championships in Timaru on November 30 to December 3. However, Cairns said due to cost restrictions and administrative issues the team would not be attending.

In the girls' division one, Marlborough Girls' College A placed fifth with MGC 10A sixth and MGC 9A eighth.

Nayland College A took out the title. MGC 10B were fourth in the girls' division two and MGC 9B seventh.
