Several Marlborough athletes face a tough day at the office on Saturday competing in the South Island half ironman championships at Lake Hood in Ashburton, and for some it will be unknown territory.

Martyn Crossley, Rachel Monk, Michelle Catterick, Sharon de Castro, Leonie van den Berg and Marg McKendry are tackling their first half ironman events.

Others coming back again after last year are Steve Smith, Almuth Waechter, Yasmin Gee and Lynne Haines, while Phil Binnie is contesting his third South Island title in succession.

The field this year comprises 115 individuals and 30 teams who will compete over a two-lap 1.9km swim on Lake Hood followed by a 90km cycle and 21km run to the finish.

For Catterick, Binnie and Smith, the race is part of their training for the Taupo Ironman in March next year.
