Defending champions setting the standard

Grovetown Top Shelf continue to set the division one pace in president's grade tennis after a clean sweep of Marlborough Magic at the Forrest Winery Marlborough Tennis Centre on Tuesday night.

Venice Robb and Raewyn Heta had to work hard to overcome Elaine Fluit and Ros Suter 9-8 in the women's doubles, but after that, it was smooth sailing for the defending champions as they cruised to a 4-0 win.

Second-placed Marlborough McRobies kept the pressure on with a 3-1 win over Rapaura Shiraz at Rapaura. Kent Register and John Patchett held off Tony Fenemor and Lindsay Dahlberg 9-8 in the men's doubles, and Eveline Apthorp and Judy Shanahan beat Trish Dahlberg and Kath Gilchrist 9-6 in the women's match as Marlborough took a 2-0 lead.

Patchett and Apthorp wrapped up the tie with a 9-2 win over the Dahlbergs, though Fenemor and Gilchrist picked up a match for Rapaura, 9-4 in the other mixed doubles.

Renwick Green made it a tough evening for Rapaura teams, with a 3-1 win over Rapaura Drylands. Chris Schollum and Chris Way battled to a 9-8 win over Darryl Harper and Bruce Paterson in the men's doubles, but it was the only success Rapaura would have. Sue Campbell and Lynne Murray cruised to a 9-1 win in the women's doubles before Renwick comfortably won both mixed matches.
