Marlborough's Ben Wheeler has received a call-up to the Central Stags Plunket Shield cricket squad for their match against the Auckland Aces at Colin Maiden Park, Auckland, starting on Saturday.

The left-arm fast bowler has enjoyed a strong season with the ball for the Biddy Kate's Marlborough Senior rep team, taking 11 wickets at 20.91, and was called in to the 12-strong squad after injuries to Seth Rance and Ewen Thompson.

He also impressed for the New Zealand team at the ICC Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand earlier this year.

Wheeler is the third bowler from the New Zealand under-19 squad to be called up to the Central Districts squad this season.

He joins Bevan Small and Adam Milne, who he will be competing with for a position in the playing 11.

Wheeler said the call up was awesome, but he still had some hard work if he was to make the playing 11 and his first-class debut.

"I think I'll have to train well tomorrow. Basically if I do that I'll have a shot at the playing 11," he said.
