If Jono Lee races in Sunday's annual Michael Huntley Memorial multisport event in Marlborough, he should win.

The 18-year-old is coming off a good performance at last week's Oceania championships in Wellington, where he finished 12th overall in his division and eighth New Zealander home over the 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run course.

Lee was pleased with his performance and said the run and ride in particular went well.

He's still not 100 per cent sure if he will race on Sunday, but certainly wants to if he feels he has recovered.

"I'll see how I feel on the day," he said.

"It's a good race. I have done it before on the old course."

Lee plans to spend the next year training hard and building up a big fitness base, his main aim being to represent New Zealand at world triathlon level.

New Zealand age group representative Mark Grammer has won the Michael Huntley Memorial triathlon for the past two years, and although he's a likely starter on Sunday, he's coming back from injury and may not be at his best.

Last year's female winner Almuth Waechter should retain her title in the women's section of the main triathlon.

Over 30 athletes are expected to compete in the various sections.

Sunday's race features a change of course, with the main race comprising a 1500m swim from the jetty at Anakiwa, followed by a 40km cycle towards Havelock and return over four laps, and a 10km run comprising four 2.5km laps, finishing at Anakiwa.

Previously, the race was held from Delta Lake near Renwick.

Run in conjunction with the main race are other variations, including a 5km run, 20km cycle and 2.5km run.

Racing starts at 10am. Entries will be taken on the day from 9am.
