Criterion Hotel owner Terry Sloan broke his leg during the Marlborough Football Knockout Cup final on Saturday.

Mr Sloan, who owns the Criterion Hotel in central Blenheim and is also a Marlborough District Council election candidate, said he got caught up in a tackle three minutes into the game and ended up worse off. Mr Sloan is a striker for Central, who ended up losing 3-1 to the Blenheim Valley Packers in extra time.

He was flown from A and P Park to Nelson Hospital by the Summit Rescue Helicopter with a snapped right tibia, and had surgery yesterday to insert a rod into his leg. He was resting in hospital today and hoped to be back in Blenheim tomorrow.
