College team South Island champs

Queen Charlotte College turned on several top performances to finish as the top-placed South Island school at the national secondary schoolgirls badminton championships in Auckland last week.

In pool play, QCC defeated Waikato Diocesan for Girls 5-1, McLeans College on a countback of sets, Wanganui 5-1, Wellington East GC 6-0 and Hillcrest HS 5-1.

Playing off for fifth to eighth place, QCC lost on a countback of points against Rangitoto, with a similar result against Hillcrest HS. The QCC team won the Timaru City Trophy as South Island's champion team for the second successive year, with Westlake boys and girls overall winners.

The QCC team was Nyomi Timms, Charlene Wills, Nicole MacDonald, Olive Butcher and Amalia McLaren-Brown. Timms scored the most wins, 11 from 14 games, with Wills winning nine from her 14 games. Gary Timms coached the team, which was managed by Helen Quentin-Baxter.
