The Wairau Taniwha scored an impressive 14-8 win over the Stoke Cobras in a combined Marlborough/Nelson senior rugby league competition match at Athletic Park in Blenheim on Saturday.

The scores were locked 8-8 at halftime but Wairau Taniwha reaped the rewards for patience, composure and excellent defence to run in a late match-winning try to Mel King.

Sloan MacDonald and Uriah Esau scored tries for the home team, Peni Sanita adding a goal.

Standout players were second-rower Esau and prop Ceyphus Samuels.

Wairau Taniwha manager Powhiri Cooper praised his team's tenacious performance and the parochial home town crowd, who he said played a big part in the victory.

Wairau Taniwha's next game is on Saturday against the Tahuna Tigers at Tahunanui Park in Nelson at 2.30pm and the following week it's back home to Athletic Park at the same time against the Wakefield Wolves.
