Sigmund to suss soccer scene
Star All Whites and Wellington Phoenix defender Ben Sigmund will spend a weekend in Blenheim for the third year running when he arrives in town on Saturday.
Sigmund, who was born in Blenheim and still has family here, first came to Marlborough in 2010 in a visit arranged by the Marlborough Express. Similar to the previous occasions he has crossed the Cook Strait from his home in Wellington, this weekend he will be mixing and mingling with as much of the Marlborough football community as possible.
Winner of the Phoenix's player of the year award for the second straight year, as well as taking out the players' player, media player and members' player awards, Sigmund is scheduled to fly into Blenheim on Saturday morning. From there he will spend time at junior football, before watching senior division matches in the afternoon.
On Saturday night there is a dinner with representatives of Marlborough football and others with links to the province's football community.
Sunday is also a busy day for the defender. In the morning there is a breakfast at McDonald's restaurant with a dozen young Marlborough footballers and after that he will watch a game in the women's competition.
In the afternoon Marlborough's up-and-coming star players will benefit from his visit when he attends the Federation Talent Centre (FTC) training.
