Denise Moller again proved too good for her major rivals as she claimed her fourth consecutive Marlborough Pool Association women's singles title at the Redwood Tavern on Saturday.

Top qualifier from section play, Moller beat Celia Bason 4-3 in an entertaining final.

There was some excellent pool witnessed in post-section play, with Nicole Chauval and Helen Pope also reaching the semifinals.

In the men's competition, Anthony Gane showed why he is the No1 player in Marlborough when he came from being the lowest-placed qualifier in section play to take out the title for the second successive year.

Gane beat second-lowest qualifier Andy Brice 5-2 in the final, after both picked up three wins in post-section play.

Brent Simmons, Lewis Green, Greg Hammond, Wayne Palatchie, Bob Henderson and Bruce Earnshaw all played well to make the last eight.

The Marlborough Open singles championships will take place on August 4-5.

Entries have already been received from Australia and Christchurch, and Nelson players are also expected. The tournament is part of a big week of pool because the Marlborough men's team will face a team, including six Australians, on August 1.

The Presidents Cup McKenna Open pairs will be played on August 11-12. The alternate shot tournament is the first of its type to be held in Marlborough.
