For the first time in four years, Marlborough's smallbore shooters can lay claim to the title of the best in the South Island after they lifted the Andrew and Faulkner Shield in Temuka on Saturday.

Fifteen provincial open teams from around the South Island competed in the annual match and, led by Regan Cowe, it was Marlborough who finished on top, seven points ahead of runners-up East Otago.

After firing a 198.13 on his double-card, Cowe shot a superb 110.7 on his single card to finish with a combined tally of 298.20.

Next best Marlborough marksman Richard Sampey also made a strong contribution, scoring 296.17.

Marlborough's advantage was 14 inners following the first round of double-cards and, with the lead changing several times, it was not until the last three single cards that they secured victory.

Marlborough last won the shield, which has been competed for since 1939, in 2008. The result means they go up against Manawatu in the annual Candyman Cup shoot. Manawatu were the winners of the Teams of Ten event, the North Island equivalent of the Andrew and Faulkner.
