Janelle Wills played consistently well to take out the under-17 round-robin competition at the Marlborough Junior Closed Badminton Championships at Queen Charlotte College last weekend.

Liese Belgrave and Zoya Timms combined to win the under-17 girls doubles and in the under-19 division, Brenna Downes won the singles title and partnered Margot Martin-Babin to win the girls doubles title.

Marlborough's top badminton player, Joseph Timms, was away with the Wellington North team at the Wisden and Slazenger Cup competitions in Hamilton, one of two invitation players allowed in teams. Timms won two out of 12 games played and in five of his matches went to three sets against more experienced opposition.

Waikato won the Wisden Cup on a countback of sets from Auckland.

Wellington North, which included six players under 19, did not win a match and were relegated to the second-tier Slazenger Cup for next year.

Meanwhile, a Queen Charlotte College team will compete in Christchurch at the New Zealand team championships in early September.

The team comprises: Joseph Timms, Blair Timms, Ben Reihana, Lachlan Woolf, Gary Timms (coach).
