Several Blenheim Swim Club members broke meet records and scored podium finishes in their divisions when the Marlborough Aquatic Centre hosted the Nelson/Marlborough Winter Championships during the weekend.

Leading the charge for the Blenheim club, as always, was 14 year-old national breaststroke champion Sara Gane. Along with gaining the Belsham Trophy, for the region's best swimmer last season, for the third straight year, Sara broke four meet records in the 100m and 200m breast, 200m butterfly and 200m individual medley (IM). With her seven race wins and one third, she finished first in a classy 13-14 years girls' field.

Toby Lloyd won all his nine events to take gold in the 13-14 years male division. He broke meet records in the 100m and 400m freestyle and the 400m IM, cutting 21sec off the previous best time.

Rebecca Hull, 15, broke the meet records for 50m backstroke and butterfly, while Sally McMath, 14, bettered the previous best in the 200m backstroke.

Other Blenheim club youngsters to get on the podium were Nick Kerry, who topped the 15-and-over male division, Lucy Kerry (second, 11-12 years girls), Anton Horton (second, 13-14 years boys) and Sarah Fisk (third, 11-12 years girls).

Host club swimmers were also to the fore in the relay section.

Their oldest team of Gane, McMath, Hull and Nick Kerry pulled out an exciting win in the 200m medley relay.

Fisk, Lucy Kerry, Megan Clark and Kazuki Jahana, the club's youngest team, were second in the same event, while Lloyd, Horton, Liam Clark and Emma Gardiner were third in the mixed 13-14 years 200m medley relay. The club's swimmers were third in the ever-popular 12-member 300m freestyle and 600m medley relays.
