Marlborough finished with a flourish at the Hatch Cup national under-13 boy's hockey tournament in Christchurch which ended on Saturday.
Marlborough beat Central Otago 4-1 on Friday then accounted for Nelson 2-1 in their final game on Saturday, Jack Boon and Eli Kepes the goal scorers.
Overall they finished 21st, with three wins, and team manager Jane Lissaman said their last few games were more evenly contested once cross-over pool matches began.
Players to shine for Marlborough were Boon, Joseph Westend, Kepes, Lauchlan Rohloff, Ben Lissaman, Hamish Tomlinson and Ollie King while goalie Rex Questin made a number of brilliant saves and was awarded the team's MVP for the week.
Meanwhile, the Marlborough under- 13 girls team finished 22nd at the Collier Trophy national tournament in Auckland.
On Friday they downed Mid-Canterbury 2-1, Annabel Wilson and Stella Blake the goal scorers then on Saturday they went down 0-1 to Auckland B.
Coach Malcolm King said the bounce of the ball didn't go their way during the week but he was proud of the huge improvement made during the season by his team.
Marlborough had two wins and two draws and the standout players were Wilson, who captained the team by example from centre half. Annamarie Booysen, Aiesha Tepuia and Georgia Bagge impressed with goalie Caitlin King also superb, making numerous fine saves.
