Canterbury's female lawn bowlers continued their recent dominance of the annual Marjorie Gundry inter-centre tournament at Kaikoura's Takahanga green on Thursday, retaining the trophy 8.5 game points to Marlborough's 3.5.
The standout performer from Marlborough was Sandra Bunt in the singles. She scored a good first-up win in the morning against Julie Adams, 21-16, then, in a marathon game in the afternoon, Bunt managed a 20-20 draw against rising Canterbury star Tayla Bruce, the time buzzer beating them in the race to 21.
The only other points secured by Marlborough in the morning round came from the four skipped by Dorothy McLean, with Josephine Romano lead, Jan Gallop at two, and Honey Reuben three.
After picking up seven shots in the first two ends they were never headed, winning 17-8.
The Marlborough pair of lead Rosemary Finch and skip Glenda Bishop proved competitive, but two bad ends in the morning round which cost them 10 shots proving the difference in their 21-14 loss, while a slow start to the afternoon, trailing by six after two ends, again proved the difference as they went down 22-15.
The other Marlborough pair of skip Val Montgomery and lead Roberta Marshall struggled early with the narrowness of the draw and trailed by 10 before they had scored. They finished well but lost 29-12. In the afternoon they bounced back to record a hard fought 13-10 win.
Pauline Bailey playing her first time for Marlborough in the singles berth, started strongly against Tayla Bruce, only to drop 15 consecutive shots in going down 21-6. Bailey had a much-improved showing in her 21-11 win in the afternoon.
The Karen Day-skipped four of lead Haleigh Wadsworth, Mary Riddell and Colleen Robbins, started slowly in the morning, never recovering from a 10-shot deficit after six ends, to go down 18-10, then repeated the performance in the afternoon going down 17-5.
