Young athlete Jade Otway broke one of the Marlborough Athletics Club's longest-standing records at a club night recently.
For 31 years, the club record for the 9-year-old girls' shot put stood at 7.76m, the mark set by previous record-holder Sonya Paget back in 1981.
However, at a Wednesday night club meet a couple of weeks ago, that distance was eclipsed when Jade hurled the shot an impressive 7.96m, to break the record by 20cm.
Interestingly, though, it was not the first time in recent memory a member of the Otway family had broken a club record in the shot put.
At the last club meet of the 2011-12 season, Jade's younger sister Kyla set a new mark in the 8-year-old girls' shot.
A multi-talented athlete, Jade is also one of Marlborough's most promising young tennis players. Despite being just 9, at the end of last month Jade played in the Marlborough under-14 tennis team that successfully defended the Malcolm Shield in their annual contest with Nelson.
