Marlborough's under-17 cricket reps suffered a narrow loss when they played a Marlborough Masters XI at Horton Park on Sunday as part of their preparation for next month's Central Districts tournament.
The Masters team was put together following Nelson Cricket's withdrawal from the originally scheduled fixture and featured several former Marlborough rep players with more than 400 caps between them, including Richard Moran (32), Hamish Moran (19), Marty Vercoe (30), Brent Hefford (71), Phil Gleeson (64), Colin Wood (76) and Greg Stretch (194).
Batting first, the Masters XI posted 223 with a blistering 70 off just 28 balls from former CD player Hefford the highlight. Hefford made the most of an under-17 attack missing several frontline options to belt six fours and six sixes. Pick of the under-17 bowlers were Ben Lowes (2-12 from six) and Sam Day (1-12 from five).
In reply, the under-17s lost early wickets before Leo Adendorff joined George Kenny in a brisk sixth-wicket partnership of 71. Kenny had four fours and two sixes in his 29-ball 52, while Adendorff held the innings together with 51 from 75 balls. Hefford returned to complete a man-of-the-match performance, taking 2-30 as the under-17s fell five runs short in an exciting finish.
The next game for the under-17 team is against Canterbury Country on November 25, after which the final 12 for the CD tournament will be announced.
