College edge out Kinoaths
Marlborough Boys' College are still favourites to win the Marlborough Volleyball Club's Fairweathers Senior Summer League president's grade following two wins in the sixth and penultimate round at Marlborough Lines Stadium on Thursday night.
In the first game of their double-header, competition-leaders MBC came up against Kinoaths. MBC established the early lead, but Kinoaths came back strongly and forged ahead by four points. The schoolboy side were not about to give the set away, though, and dug deep to take first blood 25-19.
Good defensive play and some long rallies marked the second set and, again, MBC just had the edge as they sealed a 25-22 win. Still motivated to gain something for their efforts, Kinoaths reversed the second-set result to claim a well-deserved consolation point.
Treefellas were MBC's opposition in the second president's grade match of the night and MBC were largely in control throughout. They played with good pace on attack and held a strong defensive line to collect a 3-0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-18) win.
Meanwhile, in the C grade, Smashed 'Em Bro produced a top team effort to beat Safe Crackers 2-1 in the game of the night. Jeff Spurlock played a key role for the winning side, while captain Debbie Kidd led from the front for Safe Crackers.
MBC Junior A had a positive result in their final warmup for the South Island Junior Secondary Schools Championships in Blenheim this week, downing Westmeat Geriatrics 2-1. Impressive jump serves from Hayden Shaw were a feature of the MBC performance, with Toby Hogg and Harrison Kilgour producing good all-round efforts.
In other C-grade matches, Desperate Housewives scored a 3-0 win over Wolf Pack and Fresh beat MIA 2-1.
