Guthrie Bowron Renwick scored their first win of the 2012-13 senior season on Friday night when a fine knock by opener Rikki Bovey led them to a close six-wicket victory over Biddy Kates Celtic in round one of the Marlborough Twenty20 competition at Horton Park.

After taking 2-28, including the wicket of top-scorer Sean Neal, with his left-arm spin in Celtic's total of 135, Bovey blasted 68 off just 65 balls as he steered his side to just their second-ever win in senior cricket, with one ball to spare, on the No 3 ground. Renwick began the final over, bowled by spinner Josh Poole, needing seven to win. Bovey's brother Corey played out two dot balls before getting a single off the third. Rikki Bovey then hit two and, from the penultimate ball of the match, got down on one knee and cleverly reverse-swept Poole to the boundary to seal an exciting victory.

Earlier, 40 from Neal and an unbeaten 23 from No 9 Ben Blackman were the major contributions to Celtic's total of 135. Wickets fell at regular intervals during the innings and Englishman Richard Marshall led the way with 3-15 from his four overs.

Renwick's chase did not get off to the best start when English opener George Marshall, playing in his final match before heading home, was caught in the deep for just five. However, Rikki Bovey and Vaughan Wolland steadily got things back on track and then went on to form a match-winning partnership of 98 for the second wicket. When Wolland was eventually stumped, for a valuable 41 off 40 balls, the pair had taken their side to within 33 runs of victory with 17 balls remaining. Some lusty blows from Bovey in the 18th and 19th overs took Renwick within reach of their target, before he completed his heroics in the final over.

Meanwhile, on the No 2 ground, Grove Tavern Wairau just managed to get their title defence off to a winning start as they sneaked past Criterion Hotel Wairau Valley by four runs in a low-scoring encounter.

Wairau posted just 102-8 batting first and things could have been much worse had it not been for a 53-ball innings of 43 from captain and No 3 Marty Vercoe. Ben Stark (14) and extras (16) were the only other scores in double figures as they just stumbled past three figures. Valley openers Mark Gear (3-12 off four) and Leo Adendorff (2-17 off four) were again impressive.

Duncan Grigg (13), Gear (13), Matt McCormick (11) and Richard Hagen (10) were the only players to reach double figures in a dismal Valley reply.

They began the final over with two wickets in hand and needing seven for victory. Gear was run out from the first ball and a single off the third ball and a bye off the fifth meant No 10 Sam Boyce required four from the last ball to get his side across the line. However, young seamer Josh Clarkson held his nerve and Boyce was unable to score, securing Wairau an unlikely win.

Ad Feedback

Stark (2-15 off four) was the pick of a miserly Wairau bowling unit, while Chris Pope also snared two wickets and Clarkson, Vaughan Harris and Nick Weaver all bagged one each and were very economical.
