Marlborough flex golf muscle at Murchison

Marlborough golfers dominated the major individual competition at the annual Tasman Men's Champion of Champions event at the Murchison club on Sunday.

Picton club champ Tere Poa took out the senior gross title, edging out Duncan Marfell, of the Awatere club. Marfell beat Rarangi player and fellow Marlborough senior team player Brook Hale on countback for second place. Poa shot a 27-hole score of three-under 102, including three twos.

Owen Farrell made it a successful day out for Awatere by firing a score of 113 to collect top honours in the intermediate level gross competition.

Hamish McWhinnie, of the Tasman club, won the senior nett competition, while home course trio of Kerry Foley, Nick Hewitt and Kelvin Eggers made it three consecutive triumphs for Murchison in the teams competition. Hewitt also won the intermediate nett title, while Eggers took out the junior nett competition.

Sixteen clubs from Marlborough, Nelson and Buller/Westland were represented at the event.



Senior: Winner - Tere Poa, Picton, 102. Runner-up - Duncan Marfell, Awatere, 106.

Intermediate: Winner - Owen Farrell, Awatere, 113. Runner-up - John Fielding, Nelson, 114.

Junior: Winner - Gordon Harvey, Nelson, 120. Runner-up - Elton Netto, Totaradale, 123.


Senior: Winner - Hamish McWhinnie, Tasman, 99.0. Runner-up - Peter Bourke, Greymouth, 99.5.

Intermediate: Winner - Nick Hewitt, Murchison, 95.5. Runner-up - John McPherson, Hokitika, 97.5.

Junior: Winner - Kelvin Eggers, Murchison, 95.0. Runner-up - Ray Griffiths, Golden Downs, 98.0.

Teams: Winners - Kerry Foley, Nick Hewitt, Kelvin Eggers (Murchison) 295.5 nett. Runners-up - Peter Bourke, Rob Harrison, Steve Elwood (Greymouth) 300.5 nett.
